The Benefits of Dog Enrichment

Dogs have a level of intelligence similar to that of a two-year-old human. In our modern, busy society, many families are working longer hours, which can mean our beloved fur babies are left home alone for extended periods of time.

Because of their intelligence, dogs need more than just physical exercise — they need mental stimulation too. While a daily walk with plenty of sniffing opportunities is important, research shows that just 10–15 minutes of enrichment games can be just as mentally tiring as a long walk.

The benefits of dog enrichment games include:

  •  Reducing boredom and frustration
  • Helping prevent destructive behaviours such as chewing, digging, and excessive barking
  • Keeping dogs mentally sharp — especially important for high-energy breeds
  • Reducing anxiety and building confidence
  • Encouraging calmness and improving focus

Enrichment activities are suitable for dogs of all ages. Puppies may need simpler games, while adult dogs can enjoy more challenging tasks.

Cheap or Free Enrichment Ideas

There’s no need to spend a lot of money (unless you want to!). Here are some easy and affordable enrichment ideas you can try at home:

  • Mealtime on the grass: Scatter kibble in the backyard and encourage your dog to forage.
  • Towel puzzle: Scatter kibble or treats on an old towel, roll it lengthwise, and tie a loose knot. This also helps slow down fast eaters.
  • Cardboard box foraging: Use boxes from online deliveries. Scatter treats among the packaging and let your dog sniff them out (supervision recommended).
  • Toilet roll puzzle: Place kibble or treats inside an empty toilet roll and fold the ends closed.
  • Scent games indoors: Hide high-value treats around the living room and let your dog use their nose to find them.
  • Licking enrichment: Freeze peanut butter or Greek yoghurt on a plate or lick mat and let your dog enjoy a calming lick session.
